Experience Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan National Park lies immediately north of the Makgadikgadi Pans, sharing the same ancient lake basin geology but offering a distinctly different wildlife experience. The park centres on Nxai Pan itself — a large, grassy fossil pan ringed by acacia and mopane woodland — along with a network of smaller pans including Kgama-Kgama Pan and South Pan.

During the dry season the pans appear sparse and quiet. But when the rains arrive (November to April), the transformation is dramatic: the grasslands turn vivid green, and the park hosts one of Botswana's most spectacular wildlife concentrations. Thousands of springbok give birth on the open pans — one of southern Africa's most abundant ungulate calving events — attracting lions, cheetahs, leopards, and spotted hyenas in pursuit of easy prey.

Nxai Pan is one of the best parks in Botswana for cheetah sightings. The open, flat terrain gives these elegant cats an ideal environment for high-speed hunting, and several cheetahs are regularly spotted on the pans. The park also supports healthy populations of giraffe, elephant, gemsbok, and eland, as well as bat-eared foxes and the secretive brown hyena.

The park's most celebrated landmark is Baines' Baobabs — a cluster of seven ancient baobab trees, some estimated to be over 4,000 years old, painted by the explorer Thomas Baines in 1862. These iconic trees remain virtually unchanged from Baines' original paintings, offering one of Africa's most historically evocative landscape photography subjects. The site is only accessible with a 4WD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Nxai Pan?
November to April is the peak season for wildlife, when rains bring thousands of animals to the pan. January and February offer the best cheetah activity as lions and cheetahs hunt springbok calves. The dry season (May to October) is quieter but still offers good game viewing around the central waterhole.
How do I get to Nxai Pan National Park?
Nxai Pan is approximately 220km northeast of Maun and about 170km north of Nata. The main entrance is via a turnoff from the Maun–Nata road. The access roads are sandy and corrugated, requiring a 4WD vehicle. Fly-in access is available at a small airstrip inside the park.
Where are the Baines' Baobabs?
Baines' Baobabs are located about 25km south of the main park, near the Kudiakam Pan. They are accessible via a dirt track requiring 4WD. The seven ancient baobabs — thought to be between 2,000 and 4,000 years old — can be visited on a day trip from the main camp and are best photographed in the golden light of early morning or late afternoon.
Are there facilities at Nxai Pan?
The Nxai Pan Camp is the only permanent lodge in the park, offering comfortable tented accommodation with full-board meals and guided activities. There is also a government campsite (Nxai Pan Campsite) with basic facilities including ablution blocks and braai areas. Self-caterers must bring all food and supplies.
